Awarded 2008 Counselor of the Year  

Vicki Northrop, Butte High School counselor, was recently notified that she has been selected as Idaho’s “High School Counselor of the Year”.  Her notification letter from the president of the Idaho School Counselor’s Association reads, in part, “On behalf of the Idaho School Counselor Association I would like to congratulate you on being selected as High School Counselor of the Year. You are very worthy of this accomplishment. Thanks to you and your colleagues who did the work to submit the application materials to ISCA, we really enjoyed reading about you and what you do for kids, families, educators your community, and most importantly, our profession. Congratulations!”  Mrs. Northrop has been a counselor at Butte High School since 1981 and has touched the lives of thousands of students.  Experiences noted in her selection for the award include her work as a counselor, leading the Safe and Drug Free Schools committee, student council advisor, scholarship committees, vocational education facilitator, the Natural Helper program, and various policy programs within the district such as drug testing, school-to-work, and crisis plan development.  She is well respected in the community and through-out the state for her knowledge, her compassion, and her dedication.  Angela Stauffer, one of Vicki’s former students, wrote in her letter of recommendation, “I cannot imagine a better recipient for this award than Vickie Northrop. Her passion and her enthusiasm for students is unsurpassed in my experience with high school counselors and teaching professors.”  And Mary Beth Nelson, long-time high school secretary wrote, “The proof of her accomplishments may well be seen in the actions of the students themselves. They do admire her. Former students, in all walks of life, well-rounded and productive, return often to report their successes and to give their appreciation to the counselor of their youth that truly cared.”  Vicki will receive her award Friday, October 3rd in Boise at the Idaho School Counselor’s Association state conference.

Vickie Northrop (nortvic@d111.k12.id.us) is the counselor for Butte High School.  Vickie became the Butte High School counselor in 1981. She received her Masters in Counseling Degree from Idaho State University.

Vickie is responsible for scheduling classes and educational planning, meeting with students, ISAT testing, scholarships, teaching careers,  advising the Student Counciland Safe and drug Free Schools.
